New Disciple Retention

A Local Church Leader’s Training Guide

One of the church’s constant needs is proper care and nurture for its new disciples. Too often, people join the church having had careful attention through preparation for baptism — and then following their baptism, sometimes left to themselves. This results in many spiritual babies being left to starve from lack of food and care, and the end result is that they leave the church.

Can anything be done to help our new disciples in their spiritual growth? Can the local church do something to ensure a more robust ministry to these people? Obviously, there is. There is much the local church can do to help them grow and become part of the family of God.

The purpose of this training guidebook is to provide a background for understanding new disciples and to suggest a plan for the local church on how to set up ministry to care for new disciples. To date, the church has not been as resourceful as it could have been in this area of its ministry. It is hoped that this training resource will be of some use in this ministry.
